  • Various Artists : Konstantin Raudive - The Voice of The Dead - LP (Sub Rosa, 2020)

  • For many, the first traces of the Raudive Tapes were in William Burroughs fictions and articles. The fact is, these mysterious magnetic tapes, which capture the voices of the dead, and were recorded by the baltic scientist Konstantin Raudive, are not a fiction but a reality (we are not here to judge their scientific objectivity). These tapes, as rare as Lovecraft's Necronomicon, are now in our archives / Dr Konstantin Raudive, a student of Carl Jung, was a Latvian psychologist who taught at the University of Uppsala, Sweden, before devoting the last ten years of his life to electronic voice phenomenon (EVP).He published in his book Breakthrough in 1971. His early collaborator F. Jurgenson, whom he met by the very beginning of 1965, awakened Dr. K.Raudive's interest in EVP research. Raudive spent endless hours for the thorough study of Jurgenson's books ("Voices from Space", 1964 and "Radio-Link with the Dead", 1967). From an overwhelming database (ranging about 72000 samples!), Raudive's mother seems to be statistically the most frequently reported contact personality. She usually addressed her son in the Latgalian dialect

  • First vinyl reissue of this free improv masterpiece / One of the most mythical experimental groups of all time, Musica Elettronica Viva was formed in 1966 by a group of American composers in Rome, its nucleus comprised of pianist Frederic Rzewski, sound improviser Alvin Curran and the improvisatory keyboardist Richard Teitelbaum / Taking cues from John Cage and David Tudor, MEV employed open, limitless structures, using found instruments, toys, a homemade synthesizer and the first Moog to reach mainland Europe. Improv and critical listening practices aimed to liberate listeners from the constraints of bourgeois capitalism and as their sound evolved, forms of Jewish mysticism and surrealist automaticism pointed to transcendent potential

  • Agostino Nirodh Fortini : Suoni Immaginari - LP (Black Sweat, 2020)

  • Before his prolific activity in the field of music therapy, Agostino Nirodh Fortini also embarked on his own path in electronic music. In the early eighties he was a close collaborator of Walter Maioli and Fred Gales, at the time of the pioneering label Sound Reporters. “Suoni Immaginari”, released only privately on cassette in 1988, contains a wide range of keyboards and lots of ethnic field recordings assembled with an absolutely modern praxis ahead of its time / Nirodh imagines his planetary odysseys as a complex of harmonic devices, nebula storms, glassy explosions and gravity-free falls. His operational horizon reflects further cultural ideas and suggestions; not only the artifice between natural sounds and the programmed machine but also the intrusion of arabesque dreams and jungles contaminated by invading insects and mad pipers. These are spectral symphonies which can have analogies with the fourth world of Hassell and Eno

Previously known only to cognoscenti through an obscure self-released three-track 7”, this is the first publication of the complete album, an outrageous confection that mixes art-song and theatrical monologue with live electronics / Starting life as a performance art piece described by the artists as ‘Western Performance Noir’, the record centres on a series of texts written by Friedman and Hanlon in which female narrators comically embody a series of iconic roles (The Recording Artist, The Former Movie Star, and The Rancher). Other lyrical themes include recurring references to the notorious cannibal pioneers, the Donner Party, an ironic take on Japanophilia, and the luscious “Archetypal Unitized Seminar,” a satirical poke at self-help culture, whose lyrics are rendered in Indian raga style to the accompaniment of electronic glissandi and toy noisemakers

  • The connection with and love for Radio Centraal runs through Ultra Eczema’s veins. The Antwerp-based station has functioned as a voice for myriad local underground movements for nearly forty years. From its inception, architect and ex-Situationist Rudi Renson and restaurateur Roland Rom were a critical, hilarious, and provocative voice in its repertoire of weirdos, chiefly via the weekly RTVS (Radio & Television Salon) programme / Lots of ‘music’ was made within this show, largely enabled by its presenters’ revolving door policy of regularly inviting others to contribute or host: musician and artist George Smits, actionist and performer Jacques ‘Jack The Rapper’ Ambach, artist Jörgen Voordeckers, jazz saxophonist Mike Zinzen, aspiring philosopher and bass player Filip Baert, political activist Peter Terryn, troublemaker Jan ‘JAC’ Van Den Eynde, renaissance man Mark Meulemans, graphic designer Dominic Gregoire, fashion photographer Ronald Stoops, communist activist Leo Dierckx, feminist Ellen Verryt, translator and teacher Linda Greeve, biologist and Cassis Cornuta’s sole member Daniel Renders… You get the picture / This compilation is far from complete. • Around the turn of the century, a psychedelic fellow from Argentina – Miguel Sosa – swapped the grass for the rainy streets of Antwerp. Miguel lived in the long-standing Villa Delfia squat and played classical acoustic guitar pieces on the street to earn the necessary survival dough, winding down with a sustained assault of endless Moog dreambient at home / In no time and seemingly out of nowhere, he’d become a weirdo fixture in town — and ten years later he vanished just as swiftly. In the ensuing decade, we confess to have forgotten a little about Miguel’s music; it was so present in our lives that it was easy to take for granted / Then, a few monthsago, he sent us this mind-bending master of a record he had been working on for years. His essence seems to be etched into these pieces: filmic, dramatic, plastic-classical electronic music that could very well serve as the soundtrack to a documentary about this sweet Argentenian tripper. Much in the vein of Miaux or Blake Hargreaves, and somewhat like Miguel himself, this is music that sounds like it has always been there

  • Svitlana Nianio and Oleksandr Yurchenko are musicians with a long history in the still-mysterious Kiev Underground. Nianio’s first group Cukor Bela Smert [Sugar, The White Death] were active from the late 80’s through to the early 90’s, and following an intense period of touring, collaboration, experimentation and a string of mixtapes and self-published recordings, Nianio’s first official solo album ‘Kytytsi’ was released in 1999 by Poland’s Koka Records / Oleksandr Yurchenko, a longtime collaborator and a pivotal figure in the Kiev music scene, was instrumental in creating the Novaya Scena, a loose conglomerate of artists who encouraged each other to excavate both the sounds of the West and Ukrainian tradition. ‘Znayesh Yak? Rozkazhy’ (‘Know How? Tell Me’) is the duo’s most fully realised collaboration, an enchanting, complete world in which Yurchenko’s instrumentation and playfulness with form frames Nianio’s otherworldly soprano, recalling Liz Fraser steeped in contrapuntal melody and hymnal improvisation / Originally made available on a self-released cassette in 1996 (re-issued in 2017 by Ukraine’s Delta Shock label) where the album was twinned with ‘Lisova Kolekciya’ (re-issued on LP in 2017 by Skire) this is the debut release of ‘Znayesh Yak? While dutifully producing experimental films and producing multi-media loft performances in New York's 1960s avant-garde circles, His music consists of long instrumental tones, closely pitched together to create beat patterns and multi-tracked into dense layers / Nothin to Look at Just a Record, originally released on esteemed 20th century / jazz label India Navigation in 1982, is Niblock's recording debut and often cited as his masterpiece. To celebrate Niblock's 80th birthday, Superior Viaduct is honored to present the first-time vinyl reissue of Nothin to Look at Just a Record, a high-water mark in 20th century music and listed as #5 on Alan Licht's Minimal Top Ten

  • Replica of the original RCA LP / One of the best scores signed by Piero Umiliani, a unique soundtrack settled in an immense Los Angeles as it has never been shown in an American movie / Piero Umiliani was contacted in 1958 by Mario Monicelli to compose the soundtrack of the movie "I Soliti Ignoti" (Big Deal on Madonna Street). It was not the usual kind of soundtrack, but the very first Italian soundtrack entirely made of Jazz pieces. The Movie received a nomination at the Academy Award and even if it did not succeed in winning the prize (which was awarded to "Mon Oncle" by Jacques Tati) it launched Umiliani’s career and started the prolific era of movie scores in Italy. Then in 1962 was released Smog, featuring Chet Baker and the amazing vocalist Helen Merrill. A soundtrack not to miss

  • On this double album, the Albert Ayler Trio consisted of Ayler, bassist Torbjörn Hultcrantz and drummer Sune Spångberg; four dissonant songs from their live performance on 24 October 1962 would be issued on the Bird Notes label in Sweden as 'Something Different!!!!!!' and reissued overseas as the first edition of 'The First Recording'; it included a barely-recognisablerendition of showtune 'I'll Remember April,' an off-kilter take of Sonny Rollins' 'The Stopper' retitled 'Rollins' Tune,' and a wobbly cut of Miles Davis' 'Tune Up,' along with the original 'Free.' / The exceedingly rare 'Volume 2' was also issued on Bird Notes -at least in test pressings with photos of Ayler glued to the cover- comprised of 3 extended meditations of discord, namely blown mutations of showtunes 'Softly As In A Morning Sunrise' and 'I Didn't Know What Time It Was,' along with a growling cut of Count Basie's 'Good Bait.'

  • Clear vinyl repress / Setting aside (for the moment) the electric instrumentation of "Simultonality" (2017) & "Magnetoception" (2015), Joshua Abrams conceived "Mandatory Reality" for an eight-piece acoustic manifestation of NIS, consisting of himself on Guimbri, Lisa Alvarado - harmonium & gongs, Mikel Avery - tam-tam & gongs, Ben Boye - autoharp & piano, Hamid Drake - tabla & tar, Ben Lamar Gay - cornet, Nick Mazzarella - alto saxophone, & Jason Stein - bass clarinet / A 2 LP set, the album is comprised largely of two performances, both Joshua Abrams compositions, 24 & 40 minutes in length. While new to the band’s records, long duration pieces are familiar to those who’ve heard JA&NIS in concert in recent years, where elaboration on a single composition for an hour or more is not unusual

  • Highway : Highway - LP (Alternative Fox, 2019)

  • Alternative Fox present a reissue of Highway's self-titled album, originally released in 1975. Obscure Minnesota-based power trio Highway has a long and convoluted history / This resultant group's self-titled debut album was recorded at Westminster Studio, near Fort Dodge in neighboring Iowa, during a time when Highway was based in the tiny town of Ceylon, Minnesota; privately pressed in only 500 copies, it has since become a highly sought-after item for its unusual blend of melodic hard-rock lead guitar, psychedelic garage rock, and wistful, country-tinged blues rock / Although some fans and critics have compared the group to Thin Lizzy and Wishbone Ash, primarily because of the melodic and distortion-free lead guitar licks, the band has a sound all their own, especially since all three members provide vocals, as well as fierce instrumental licks, with furious drum rolls from Cammarata and Murphy and Bannister sometimes playing the same notes in unison

  • On the cover of his first album Flutes Libres, Jean Cohen-Solal boldly declared that "nothing can stop a flautist". While that statement may be up for debate, Cohen-Solal’s 1973 sophomore LP Captain Tarthopom goes about making a compelling case for the humble flute / He coaxes a great range of sounds and styles from his instrument - at times he overdubs harmonies on the Captain Beefheart-ish "Ludions", at others he lets the instrument wander over experimental dronescapes / Mentioned on the legendary Nurse With Wound list!

  • Reissue with obi and 16 pages booklet / Jacques Thollot was a French drummer who perfected an idiosyncratic style of playing that was most fully realised on "Quand le son devient aigu, jeter la girafe à la mer" ("when the sound gets high-pitched, throw the giraffe into the sea"). It's a strange collection of pieces, whose arrangements are often just based around drums and piano. This LP sounds like a cousin of krautrock, especially considering the odd drones and samples that are the backdrop to Thollot's playing

  • Meara O'Reilly : Hockets For Two Voices - 12" (Cantaloupe Music, 2019)

  • Meara O'Reilly’s Hockets for Two Voices is brief and broad, spanning just over ten minutes across seven parts. In its earliest versions, parts of Hockets were commissioned by Tauba Auerbach (a photo of whose sculpture adorns the jacket) for a performance at The Kitchen in NYC in 2016; and was performed and recorded in its entirety in Los Angeles in 2017-2018 / Hocketing is a demanding practice of sharing a single melody between many voices in alternating notes, characteristic of medieval European music but also present in indigenous folk traditions. O’Reilly approaches this technique from a childhood immersion in classical music, a young adulthood in the experimental and noise world, and a more recent return to the discipline of composing orchestral music / This synthesis is demonstrated with precision and singularity in Hockets, a playful and impressive expression of vocal dexterity joining mature musical traditions with a younger avant-garde and popular history of stereo panning, perception puzzling abstraction and psychoacoustic research pioneered by Albert Bregman, "who demonstrated how the limits of our perceptual processes can actively shape our experience of music." Written for two performers, O’Reilly sings both parts in this recording, a labor requiring one year to execute. The results are presented with care by Cantaloupe

  • Moondog : Moondog And His Friends - LP (Primitiv Sounds, 2018)

  • Originally released in 1953, this collection of very early Moondog pieces features the same tribal rhythmic impulse as his famed Prestige recordings, but there's an impressive line in chamber music running through these compositions: the B-side is dedicated to two suites for strings, which could easily pass for more traditional works were it not for the heavy bongo presence / Essentially though you can hear a sense of discipline, and a thorough working knowledge of conventional classical composition in Moondog's work, even if he ultimately chooses to subvert it. All this is further destabilised by slightly weirder excursions like 'Tree Frog - Be A Hobo', which fit into some odd percussion-centric take on what might loosely be termed as a 'song' / More idiosyncratic, entirely uncategorizable work from one of 20th century music's true mavericks

  • Includes a 12-page accordian-style booklet with documents from Luc Ferrari's archive, notes from the producer José Iges, and an introduction by Andrea Zarza / L’Escalier des Aveugles, or The Stairway of the Blind, was commissioned in November 1990 by Spanish National Radio (Radio Nacional de España). Asked for a piece to premiere as part of the European Day of Music, Luc Ferrari returned with a radiophonic concept that organised his anecdotal music into montage form, sequencing short, elusive narratives in a successive way / The completed composition is formed of thirteen chapters containing a mixture of environmental and synthesised sound, commentary, chatter, and encounters with people and places. Each focuses on a small event within this playbook, and Ferrari notes that each "in addition to being a realistic photograph, will be the subject of a 'setting to music': fragments of voice and atmosphere will be sampled and will produce musical matter or a 'song'."

  • Diptera : 001 [Antenna] - 12" (Mana, 2018)

  • In the press release for their debut EP, producer duo Diptera promise that 001 (antenna) offers an electro-acoustic approach to the sounds and textures of UK Garage. Quite a challenge, it would seem / But you know what? They're not wrong. Even in the saturated world of deconstructed club music, it’s rare that you hear a group take to their task with such a spirit of invention / The division of labour is quite clear - Activist DJ sends over a few two-steps and shuffles to partner-in-crime Wesley, and Wesley then proceeds to take them apart and refit them in new and interesting ways. As a result Diptera's sound is what you might get if you locked Matmos, Szare and MJ Cole together in a room with a sampler and a couple of bits of hardware

  • Fote : Same - LP (Robot, 2020)

  • Following the short-lived Truth Club with Trefor Goronwy (who later went on to work with This Heat and The Camberwell Now), Fote was formed in 1981 with the trio of Robert Haigh, Deborah Harding, and Trevor Reidy. Releasing two 12” EP’s along with one track featured on a split 7” with Truth Club, Fote’s entire studio recordings consisted of just 8 tracks / With angular constructs of post-punk, free-form improvisations, and wicked time signatures, these tracks shredded boundaries one can still hear to this day. These early foundations are also heard in much of Haigh’s later Sema compositions as well as Reidy’s motorik percussion with Nurse with Wound, Danielle Dax, and The Monochrome Set / Curiously, Harding’s vocal tensions and outright unhinged polarities in Fote sound like much of the exorcisms and brilliant psychodramas on many of Chrystal Belle Scrodd’s (Diana Rogerson) later solo albums. Cut at 45 rpm for maximum fidelity, including all 8 tracks, and featuring the original sleeve artwork by Deborah Harding. An absolutely essential document from the early 80s independent British post-punk scene

Weltformat, like its predecessors, builds on decades of solo and collaborative efforts by its creators - Archetti with famed Krautrock pioneers, Guru Guru, among many others, and Wiget with Werner Lüdi, Taku Sugimoto, Tetuzi Akiyama, and others.Sculpted from the intricate tonal interventions and responses of Archetti on guitar, mandolin, and electronics, and Wiget on cello, electronics, and vocals, across the album’s four sides the duo constructs a remarkably diverse landscape in sound, folding touchstones of modern classical, free improvisation, minimalism, harsh noise, and ambient music, into a seamless, singular expanse

The album is lush and tropical -- scratchy bossa nova, street noise, internet ephemera, fat drums, subtle turns, and the guiding hands of Bodikhuu’s favorite artists, Dilla and Damu the Fudgemunk. Composed on a battered MPC in a Soviet-era housing block on the outskirts of Ulaanbaatar, "Rio/Bodianova" is a love letter to Brazil, a place Bodikhuu knows only through music and his imagination / "Rio" and "Bodianova" were originally released as digital EPs and have become classics in the small but passionate Mongolian hip-hop underground. This new LP combines these legendary releases -- the first time a Mongolian hip-hop record has been pressed to wax. The tracks have been fully remastered by Tim Stollenwerk. Artwork comes from hip-hop illustrator David Barnett

What would become an inimitable explosion of energy and vision from Japan heralded in the glory days of '90s alternative rock, death metal, and psychedelic synth music, Masonna surpassed all extremes with a full frequency violence that was as fast as it was psychedelic / Not once has any artist emerged with more intensity and focus in the history of noise. It was said onstage that Masonna has reduced the pure elements of classic rock, the guitar stack, the feedback, and the lead singer to an explosive few seconds of visceral feedback, metallic noise from the physical shaking and pressure of his fist around the shaker, processed through the self-described "harshtronics" and indeed ending in "exclamation!" • Cranioclast : Cract On Sail - LP (Auf Abwegen, 2018)

  • Grey vinyl / Cract On Sail is an epic work spanning two sides of an LP. The piece is deliberately divided by a harsh cut in the middle, thus refreshing the listeners impressions after turning the record. Cract On Sail progresses intuitively in an almost linear way and includes strong guitar riffs, flexing bass and synthetic rhythms and sample-laden electronic scapes. It is the most accessible Cranioclast today – CoC in 2018 sound almost like pop!

  • Ocean Youth Club, O Yuki Conjugate : Divided Self - 12" (HVNX, 2019)

  • Divided Self’ is a highly conceptual release that explores ?the concept of duality; the self and the false self, the tension between an authentic identity and the false ?sane?identity we all present to the world?. As OYC themselves explain, it connects the ideas of Scottish psychiatrist R. D. Laing with Borges?short story ‘The Garden of Forking Paths’ to examine the idea that alternate realities exist at the same time”. To comprehend and hold these parallel universes in the mind, they add, is to flirt with insanity, logic has no place here / ‘Divided Self’ is a collaboration between current OYC members Roger Horberry and Andrew Hulme with DIY legend and producer Colin Potter. It was recorded live at Potter’s IC Studio in a semi-improvised manner. Because, as they put it, Ocean Youth Club may be conceptual, but it’s also an open and playful entity?

  • Gareth Davis, Duane Pitre : Nòtt - CD (Midira, 2019)

  • Stunning 4 panel digisleeve, featuring artwork by Rutger Zuydervelt (Machinefabriek) / "Nótt" is the result of a studio session by two common musicians: Gareth Davis on bass clarinet and Duane Pitre on electronics. After releasing their solo releases and other collaborations on labels like Important Records, Miasmah and Sonic Pieces, finally both came together with that 34minutes drone, with pinches of jazz, noise and experimental folklore / "Nótt" is named after the goddess of night from the norse mythology and fits very well as title, cause there is something foregrounding that feels dark as night and the longer you listen to the track, the more you discover, like your eyes adjust in the darkness
